Project Description

| For this assignment, students had to pretend to spend one month alone in the wilderness. They had to create a journal sharing possible experiences they would have had, design their cabin, and they had to decide what items they would bring with them. Students were told to plan the trip based on the fact there was no electricity or grocery stores nearby. Also, students could only bring what they could carry in a backpack. Students had to complete a planning sheet before the activity helping them to brainstorm their ideas for food sources, possible dangers, etc. The assignment was for individuals. This was a culminating project for the novel Sign of the Beaver. Students had to use the experiences of the main character, who was also left alone in the wilderness, to create their own adventure. |

| Standards | This project does correlate with the standard course of study for my state by connecting the main character's experience to their own experiences. Students also had to apply the experiences of the main character to what their own adventure in the wilderness. |
| Teacher Tips | I feel that the rubric and project were successful. I did have students design their cabin on paper, but I think it would be better if they made a model of their cabin. RubiStar helps improve my class project by helping me create rubrics more efficiently. It also gives my students a guideline so they know what it expected of them. |
