Oral Presentation Rubric: 3D Sonnet

Project Description
This is a multimedia presentation of a student's own sonnet. As part of our poetry unit, we study sonnets for two days, analyzing the meaning and structure of Shakespearean sonnets. After the students understand the length, rhyme scheme and rhythm they are asked to write a sonnet about their 'Home' and are given an assignment sheet. Students revise and edit their poem and then it becomes digital. We put poems into a word processor and then compile pictures that go with their poem. The poems plus the pictures are then put into a PowerPoint® presentation. Students find music that goes with the theme of their poem. This PowerPoint® is presented to peers and parents on a projection screen with music. This is what I call '3D' sonnets. Ideas adapted from Lawrence Baines, 3D English.

Teacher TipsThe rubric was a great help in evaluating the students’ presentations. RubiStar gave me a quick way to establish a rubric using preexisting criteria and adding some of my own. This is a list of additional items that I grade along with the RubiStar rubric:

Sonnet uses correct rhyme scheme. /5
Sonnet uses iambic pentameter correctly. /5
Sonnet has clear meaning. /5
Sonnet uses imagery. /5
PowerPoint has seven images/proper format. /5
PowerPoint is edited carefully. /5
Presentation Grade. /20
I would not change the nature of the assignment. I would, however, make sure that I taught students to re-size pictures used in the PowerPoint®. This would increase the speed of the presentation.
