Building A Structure : Alternative Energy Models

Project Description
This project is the final project of a class that investigates sources of renewable energy and more sustainable ways to live everyday life. Each year, students choose 2 or 3 topics (or elective classes) to study, we call this a Talent Development Investigation. They are in each of those elective classes for one hour per week for 6-9 weeks. For the final cycle of Talent Development students choose to return to one of their previous classes for a project based learning class. This session lasts 8-10 weeks; again for one hour per week. At the end of cycle there is a Talent Development presentation day. Parents, students, and the community are invited to view the projects.

The students in this group chose to build many different items relating to renewable energy and sustainable communities. The projects included a solar cooker, some mini wind turbines, a model of a sustainable home, designing a hydrogen cell car, and assembling a toy solar car. One project I suggested that no one wanted to do was a school wide recycling project.

The project was assigned to the entire group. Students selected the project they wished to do. They also decided if they wished to work alone or in a group.

  • Teacher TipsThe rubric was very successful. It gave the students a framework and guideline for the project. In particular, the sections where they were required to have a plan and a timeline were quite necessary. These guidelines helped to keep students on target. I may modify the rubric this year depending upon the projects selected by the group. Using the rubric created in Rubistar improved the overall quality of all of the projects. It gave the students something to strive toward.
