Group Planning -- Research Project: Students Walk Across Their State

Project Description
Technology needed for the project is a computer lab, along with access to a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, and an Internet browser. Each student also has access to his/her own e-mail address. The students will be provided with poster paper or construction paper for the different activities.

1. Each student will design a map of North Dakota, create a key for the map, and choose a route they would like to follow as they walk across the state. A map will also be designed for the class to use as they walk across the state as a group. We use the jigsaw approach in this activity. After the state map is created we divide it into a western, middle, and eastern section.

2. The students use formal writing techniques and a word processing program to contact their peers and others across the state to find out information about other communities and school activities. They will also ask for e-mail addresses of their peers across the state so they can gather information through e-mail. The students will try to set up some keypals.

3. Students will use a spreadsheet program to log their pedometer readings. They will have to figure out the formula to convert their footsteps to miles and apply it to the spreadsheet. After they have calculated their miles and the groups miles they will go back to the maps and move along their route.

4. The students will use their spreadsheets to create graphs that will be used to compare their weekly footsteps and also to compare with their classmates.

5. The class is divided into three groups with each group being given a section of the state broken up in section one. As a team they decide which cities or towns they would like to research in their section. The group then splits into two expert teams to find information on half of the chosen cities or towns. Students will use the Internet to find information about some of the cities or towns in North Dakota. After each expert team has finalized the information they would like to use they meet with their team to report on their findings. The group then puts their information together to make their presentations to others.

6. Students will pair up and use the Internet to do research on the health benefits of walking and other exercises. They will put together an exercise routine for themselves that will be a total body workout.

Teacher TipsThe project spread into the health, math, language arts, physical education, and social studies curriculums. The rubric was successful because it gave the students a real feel for what they felt they contributed to the group, and how their group did as a whole. If I were to do this project again, I would do it in parts throughout the year, so that the students would have more time to get the information from the towns and cities. It was a real learning experience.
