Project Description

This assignment came from two major events. The first event was and is the ongoing violence in Iraq and the Middle East. The second event centered on the shooting death of one of my former students. This young man was gunned down during some kind of violence resulting from drugs and gangs. At the funeral, a fight broke out among the mourners and the police had to come and break it up.
The assignment was as follows: What is your opinion of violence? Is it just part of life? Can anything stop it? Students were asked to first consider if violence was really part of human nature or were people basically good and kind and it was just a minority causing the problem. | Teacher Tips | Students worked on the project as individuals. The focus of this class is English Language Development. This was a perfect opportunity for us to practice our persuasive language structures on a subject that my students knew. It meets both the California Standards for English and English Language Development. This is probably the best writing I have seen all year. The kids felt very strongly about the subject and had plenty to say about it. The project went very smoothly and without difficulty. By creating the rubric and showing it to the kids before we wrote, they knew exactly what was expected of them. This helps them to focus on what is truly important in an assignment and not get distracted by unimportant details. |
