Project Description
|
We have been interspersing our class work all year with nonfiction, real life materials. This was a logical extension of a lesson we were doing on how to use the Yellow Pages. I wanted to extend the lesson by having the students create an advertisement of their own. Students were told to assume that they owned a business and then create an ad for the Yellow Pages. At a minimum, students were instructed to include the business name, address, and phone number with a brief description of the product. In order to excel they had to come up with illustrations and additional information such as store hours, a map, and an e-mail address. Students were encouraged to look at other ads in the Yellow Pages to get ideas about what other information to include and how to incorporate it into their ad.

Teacher Tips | I was pleased with the results of the project. My students were successful and the rubric helped them to focus on essential knowledge to successfully complete the project. I have found that a rubric really helps students focus on what I will be looking for in the finished product.
RubiStar enabled me to create a rubric with a minimum of effort and the editing feature helped me hone in on what was important. I find that I am more 'fair' when I use a rubric to grade a project because the standard for performance is set from the beginning.
